March 21, 2025 – Google has taken down 331 malicious apps from the Play Store after discovering they were stealing user data. These apps, collectively downloaded over 60 million times, posed a severe security threat by secretly harvesting personal information, including location data, device details, and even sensitive credentials.

Cybersecurity researchers flagged the apps for engaging in fraudulent activities, including hidden spyware and unauthorized data collection. Some of these apps disguised themselves as utility tools, photo editors, and gaming applications, making it difficult for users to detect malicious behavior.

“User security is our top priority. We have removed these apps from the Play Store and disabled them on affected devices,” a Google spokesperson stated.

This crackdown is part of Google’s ongoing efforts to strengthen Play Store security by using AI-driven malware detection systems. However, experts warn that malicious apps continue to evolve, urging users to be cautious when downloading apps, especially from lesser-known developers.

To stay safe, users are advised to:
Download apps only from trusted developers.
Check app reviews and permissions before installation.
Keep their devices updated with the latest security patches.

Google has assured users that it will continue refining its security measures to prevent similar threats in the future.-AirMedia Broadcast
