During his visit to Mauritius, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi witnessed the signing of eight agreements between India and Mauritius, further strengthening bilateral relations. His visit coincided with Mauritius’ Independence Day celebrations, where he attended as the chief guest.
Modi, along with Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, participated in a special event in the capital, Port Louis. The agreements cover various sectors, including maritime security, trade, and technology. Additionally, Modi announced the ‘Maha Sagar’ initiative, aimed at enhancing regional maritime cooperation. This visit reaffirms India’s strong partnership with Mauritius and its commitment to the Indian Ocean region.
The ‘Maha Sagar’ Initiative
PM Modi first introduced the ‘SAGAR’ (Security and Growth for All in the Region) initiative in 2015 to enhance economic collaboration among Indian Ocean nations. Now, a decade later, he has rebranded and expanded it as ‘Maha Sagar,’ emphasizing not only economic progress but also regional security cooperation.
Strategic Importance of Mauritius
International political analysts view this move as India strengthening its ties with Mauritius like never before. As China expands its naval influence globally and seeks closer ties with Indian Ocean nations, India is taking proactive steps to maintain its strategic presence.
Mauritius, despite being a small island nation, holds immense geopolitical importance due to its location. It lies near Africa’s southern region and along a critical sea route connecting India, making it a vital military and economic partner.
The Chagos Islands Dispute
When Mauritius gained independence in 1968, the UK retained control of the Chagos Archipelago, leasing Diego Garcia to the US for a military base. Mauritius has long demanded the return of these islands.
During Indira Gandhi’s tenure as Prime Minister, she had planned to deploy the Indian Army and Navy to suppress an uprising against the government of Mauritius, led by Indian-origin citizens. She assured the then-Mauritian Prime Minister that Indian troops could land within five hours. However, due to internal military conflicts, the operation never took place.
India’s Growing Role in the Indian Ocean
Through the new agreements and the ‘Maha Sagar’ initiative, India aims to strengthen its presence in the Indian Ocean while ensuring that Mauritius does not fall under Chinese influence. This agreement signifies India’s long-term commitment to the security and development of the region.-AirMedia Brodcast
