UNION CABINET APPROVES EXPANSION OF PRIVATE FM RADIO TO 234 NEW CITIES

The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has recently approved a major initiative to extend the reach of private FM radio across India. On Wednesday, August 28, 2024, the Cabinet sanctioned a proposal for e-auctions aimed at establishing 730 new FM radio channels in 234 cities and towns. This expansion is backed by an estimated reserve price of ₹784.87 crore.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav highlighted the benefits of this decision at a press conference held at the National Media Center in New Delhi. The rollout is expected to enhance access to diverse and localized content, promoting regional dialects and cultures while fostering creativity. This move is also anticipated to create significant employment opportunities within the FM radio sector.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative on X, stating, “The Cabinet decision on the rollout of private FM Radio to 234 cities and towns will enhance access to diverse and local content, thus encouraging creativity and encouraging local languages as well as cultures.”

This expansion marks a significant step in broadening the reach of FM radio across the country, providing communities with a platform to showcase their unique voices and perspectives.
