Live Phone-In Programme on World Suicide Prevention Day

Belagavi: KLE Venudhwani 90.4 FM Community Radio Station, Belagavi, in collaboration with KLE Academy of Higher Education and Research (KAHER), Belagavi, and KLE Society’s Shri B. M. Kankanawadi Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya and Hospital, Belagavi, organized a Live Health Awareness Phone-In Programme on the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day.

The programme was conducted on Thursday, 10th September 2026, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Dr. Suhas Kumar Shetty, Principal and Medical Director, KLE Shri B. M. Kankanawadi Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya and Hospital, Belagavi, participated as the resource person and created awareness among the listeners about World Suicide Prevention Day and the importance of suicide prevention.

World Suicide Prevention Day is observed every year on 10th September to create awareness about suicide prevention, promote mental health awareness, and encourage communities to work together to prevent suicide.

During the programme, Dr. Suhas Kumar Shetty spoke about the major causes of suicide, the age groups in which suicidal tendencies are more commonly observed, warning signs among individuals who may be at risk of suicide, and ways to control and prevent suicidal tendencies.

He also highlighted the impact of excessive use of social media and online games on the mental health of young people, including stress, depression and emotional difficulties, and explained ways to cope with these challenges.

Dr. Suhas Kumar Shetty emphasized the importance of seeking professional counselling and consultation from psychiatrists or mental health professionals for individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts or tendencies. He also explained the importance of listening to and supporting individuals in distress and not leaving them alone during a crisis.

Information was also provided about the treatment facilities and services available at the Department of Psychiatry, KLE Shri B. M. Kankanawadi Ayurveda Hospital, Belagavi. Dr. Suhas Kumar Shetty answered various questions raised by the listeners during the live phone-in programme.

The programme was conducted by Manisha P. S. and Manjunath Pai, Programme Presenters, KLE Venudhwani 90.4 FM.

The programme successfully created awareness among the public about mental health, suicide prevention, the role of family and society in supporting individuals in distress, and the importance of seeking timely professional help.
